Five Links #110
1. This hue shall pass
This is a great iteration on colour contrast tools from Clearleft. It doesn’t just show you which colour combinations pass or fail WCAG criteria, it also lets you tweak failing colours/combinations to fix them there and then.
2. Just
“Just build it faster” says the stressed stakeholder. “We just need to add this feature” says the skint founder. “Can’t we just…” says the tired designer, “Just do it” says the giant corporation.
I’ve heard these phrases lots of times, it’s frustrating, and it’s easy to be angry at the person saying them. I’ve said them too, I won’t lie, nobody is perfect, except that hero you’ve not met yet.
3. FK Screamer
Lovely condensed typeface and another example of simple and accessible licensing: single cuts for desktop and web at just €60.
4. The color system I wish I understood sooner
This is the colour system I’ve been using on all projects for the last couple of years. I’ve found it to be a great balance in many situations, letting me define and tweak values without being too granular.
5. Reflections on running a self-hosted personal site in the year two thousand twenty-six
Relatable:
Here’s a condensed list of the things I want to mitigate on my personal site:
- Personal posts being easily consumed by bots
- The ever-increasing influx of spam email coming in to my publicly-available email inbox
- Unnecessarily high bandwidth consumption
- Comment / pingback spam
What am I up to?
- I gave the Unoffice Hours Webring a visual refresh
- I’ve had a couple of projects wind down at the same time, so I now have immediate availability for new projects – any referrals or shares greatly appreciated
- I’m running an offer on design consultations. These are £125 over the autumn (normally £200), and a great way to get design feedback without the commitment of a larger project
- Every so often, someone asks me “how can I support your content/projects?” so I’ve created a Support page
- My next available Unoffice Hour slot is 19 August
